The first experience with Muay Thai
Here at Samui Fight House there’s nothing we enjoy more than the opportunity to train Muay Thai with a family. And what a joy the past ten days have been. Anna, from Stockholm, was visiting Samui with her 10 year old son Theodore. Although Anna had trained Muay Thai before, her son never had. But what better place for your initiation into the sport than its homeland? And is there a more beautiful place for Muay Thai training than Koh Samui? Obviously, we might be a teensy bit biased, but we think not!
Working with resident Samui Fight House Muay Thai trainer, Christian Jungerby, Anna and Theodore learned all the basics; the six main punches, attacking elbows and knees and the correct guard and stance. Muay Thai is a highly technical sport and it’s so much easier to learn the correct technique from the beginning than to try and correct bad habits when they’re already ingrained. All our Muay Thai trainers are professional fighters so they’re not just talking the talk. They’ve been in the ring and are able to bring that real life experience to the training ring. Christian has 57 professional fights under his belt, That experience, combined with his sense of fun and his never ending patience, mean clients always leave his sessions with a giant grin on their faces.
Once clients have learned all the basic moves, the next step is to spar. This is when you truly learn whether you’re holding your guard correctly. Because if you’re not, your nose will quickly receive a bop to remind you! And taking a punch that normally lands on a pad and understanding how and when to use it against an opponent brings a whole new level of understanding to your Muay Thai training.
Watching Muay Thai fights at Chaweng Stadium
In addition to their training at Samui Fight House, Anna and Theodore attended to Miguel’s 9th fight in Thailand taking place at Chaweng Stadium. When you have an understanding of the sport and its technicalities, watching the professionals slug it out becomes even more exciting. We’ve also discovered that Theodore is a dab hand with the camera, so shhh, don’t tell his mum, but we’re thinking about kidnapping him and making him our in-house photographer!
